Mahadevan has pioneered multiple F&B concepts such as Hot Breads and was also the erstwhile promoter of Oriental Cuisines. The portfolio of brands include Benjarong, China Town, The Marina, Enté Keralam, Teppan – Sushi Bar and Japanese Grill, Sera – The Tapas Bar and Restaurant, Writers Café, Va Pho – Asian Canteen and more. By allowing customers to Purchase with a Purpose, AFPL works with multiple not for profit organisations aimed at upliftment of the underprivileged and many other community oriented concepts.

Philosophy

The Essence of Advantage Foods is the story behind the latest Café in town!

Located at Egmore, Adyar, Taramani, Gopalapuram, Anna Nagar, R.A Puram and Bangalore, Writer’s Cafe exists only for a cause. An establishment which provides a platform for “The Spastic Society of Tamil Nadu”, an organisation AFPL works with closely by providing vocational training for its students in the art of pastry making, ice cream crafting and popcorn production. The students are then provided with full-time opportunities with AFPL and its affiliate companies.

The special women of PCVC (International Foundation for Prevention of Crime and Victim Care) and SANKALP – a school that nurtures children with special learning difficulties (SLD) and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) as well as facilitating work skill acquisitions. Profits go to supporting their cause and improvement towards their self-reliance.

We also currently employ acid burnt and domestically abused victims who have been training with us, honing their culinary skills in baking and confectionery. The aim of our project is set on Inclusivity, that breaks social norms.

Chennaites would most certainly know of Hot Breads or the fine dining restaurants like Ente Keralam, Benjarong, Teppan, etc…, but little less known is the architect of this ‘world on a plate’ M. Mahadevan. Mahadevan, ‘is the change’ that he wished for the culinary scene in Chennai. The stand alone restaurants are specific, artistic, hygienic & the food ‘unparalleled’. He eschewed the familiar cookie-cutter mentality of fast food chains and chose to open multiple brands of speciality restaurants. On the hindsight, the drive came from Arthur Hailey’s ‘Hotel’. This intense passion kicked off moonlighting as a Professor by day and as a trainee at a hotel by night.

In 1981, still teaching, he opened a Chinese takeaway ‘China Garden’ with an investment of Rs. 60,000/-, appropriately when Chinese Cuisine was a craze in the city. Today, he has operations across 18 countries and has a finger in the pie of more than 300 eateries across the globe. Mahadevan’s templates to be adhered to are diligence, quality control, hygiene & authenticity.

Tarun Mahadevan, 24, now heads the Indian arm of operations under the parent, Advantage Foods Pvt. Ltd. (Formerly Cool Cream Milano Pvt. Ltd). Having recently graduated from the University of Bath, Tarun holds a BSc. (Hons) in Business Administration.

During his tenure in the United Kingdom, he gained experience in financial services and business strategy. Tarun worked with an investment services company before switching over to the buy side and gaining exposure with a UK based mid-market private equity firm. After this, he decided to move back to India and focus on growing the family business.
